i feel like whilst watching breaking bad, everyone has a moment in which they realised walter is a shitty person. my moment was when he watched jane die and didn't intervene. i understand he might've done it to 'help' jesse, but i was just never able to forgive him. i loved jane and i wanted to see more of her as well as her relationship with jesse. even if it wasn't a healthy relationship, they loved each other and both of them deserved better. i made a playlist that i think nails down different feelings and moments within (and after) their relationship. this article has my top 5 songs in the playlist and why they're relevant.
junkhead by alice in chains describes what addicts go through and how no one will understand them like other addicts can. this fits into jesse and jane perfectly because they both struggle with addiction and feel like no one else really gets it. in jesse's case, walter doesn't understand his disease and sometimes doesn't see him as his equal because of it. in jane's case, her dad does her best to understand her disease but still will never be able to fully grasp what it's like. jesse and jane both found comfort in the fact that someone finally got them.
i can see jesse listening to high to death by car seat headrest directly after jane died. he'd be crying on the floor in shock, specially relating to the lines "and i'll never be alright again" and "i sat there on the steps/considering death". it's clear to see that when she died, jesse's whole world collapsed and he thought he would never recover. this resonates with "i guess high to death ended up being an expression of mourning for an entire world" which is something the singer said about the song in an interview with peyton thomas.
if i get high by nothing but thieves is a heartbreaking song and every time i listen to it i just want to cry. i feel like the line "if i get high enough, will i see you again?" describes jesse's thought process after jane died and he went on a self destructive drug bender. in addition to this, the line "i dream of our escape" makes me think of their dream to use jesse's money to go to new zealand and get a fresh start.
the song come back to earth by mac miller is a gentle song which is relaxing to listen to. this song deals with the topic of addiction and sobriety. it describes how when you're absorbed in an addictive cycle, it begins to feel like the norm - no matter how damaging it is. it also explains how he (mac miller) wants to and would do anything to get out of his head which jesse can definitely relate to. more obviously, the title is something he definitely thought about jane (more than once).
welcome and goodbye by dream, ivory is a beautiful song that talks about welcoming someone into your life, it feeling amazing but having to say goodbye anyway. if that doesn't explain what jane and jesse went through, i don't know what does. even though this song is meant to be about on and off relationships, i still think if interpreted in a certain way, it narrates the couple perfectly.
